2009 ArticlesThe Food and Drug Administration Amendments Act of 2007 gave the FDA the authority to require manufacturers to develop and implement a Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS), for any drug at any time, whenever the FDA deems such action is necessary to ensure the benefits of a drug outweigh its risks. Extended-release (ER) and long-acting (LA) opioids are one medication class upon which the FDA has focused its attention because of steadily rising rates of opioid misuse, abuse, and accidental overdose.
Now, government regulation of the prescribing of ER and LA opioids has been expanded. On April 19, 2011 the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) released the Obama Administration’s “Epidemic: Responding to America’s Prescription Drug Abuse Crisis” plan. The plan is part of the White House's first national action plan to fight prescription drug abuse. The ONDCP, the DEA, and the FDA are banding together to address the problem they say has become "an epidemic."
