Morphine sulfate 20 mg/mL oral concentrate is a highly concentrated opioid medication that is used by many hospice patients. Using morphine 20 mg/mL properly requires patient education and an understanding on the part of the patient and/or caregiver of how to calculate the appropriate volume to administer for a given dose. Dosing errors involving such a highly concentrated solution can be very dangerous, even fatal.
To assist our hospice partners in educating their patients and caregivers on the safe use of morphine 20 mg/mL, we have developed this free, downloadable single-page patient handout. This document gives patients and caregivers important information about morphine 20 mg/mL, including a chart they can use to determine what volume of liquid to administer for a given dose. Please feel free to download and print as many copies as you need, and to share this document with your colleagues.

| The handout is clear and I think would be well received, but we only use OMS for dyspnea, which you did not address in the handout. -- BK Mezzetti RN CHPN Posted 7/16/2012 10:56:13 AM |
