A Pharmacy Benefit Manager (PBM) is primarily responsible for processing and paying prescription drug claims. A PBM is also responsible for developing and maintaining a formulary, contracting with pharmacies, and providing additional services such as drug utilization analysis and reporting. A Pharmacy Benefit Manager will fill drug prescriptions by mail order and/or a network of pharmacies. Due to the volume of claims processed, a PBM can offer a lower discounted rate than can be negotiated by individual organizations. With a single contract with a PBM, your hospice can access multiple pharmacies at one discount rate and receive one consolidated invoice that has been adjudicated online in real-time.
